Re: 1st AR mounted rifles - finding my uncle

Hello David,
There are no easy answers to your questions. Many men died from communicable disease as soon as they joined the service.
So, first you need to know if he died of illness or from battle. His enlistment date (7 Sep 1861 - Clarksville, AR) indicates that he joined the 1st Ark Mounted Rifles Regiment just before the battle at Wilson Creek Missouri (Oct 10, 1861) where they were caught in an open field at daybreak and hit with artillery from guns attached to Sigel's command. They had a very high casualty rate.
You can find him and his company roster at http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/1stmtcoc.htm

The red bordered box at the top of this page will lead you to a search for his records.

Two good books on the 1st Ark Mtd. Rifles are:
Wilson's Creek by Piston and Hatcher
Reminiscences of Company H, First Arkansas Mounted Rifles by Robt. H. Dacus

I will post this on the History Site also, as many of us are curious about these things.

Happy Hunting!
