I am researching Private Aaron Dowler, Company C, 26th Arkansas Infantry. He received a discharge on surgeon’s certificate 13 APR 1863. He survived the war and moved to Caseyville, IL, where he died on 25 JUN 1920. In 1907 (or 1917 – certificate almost illegible), Aaron applied for a Union Pension from Illinois, giving his unit as Company D, 5th Arkansas Cavalry, USA.

Was there such a unit as the 5th Arkansas Cavalry, USA?
