Perry, you'll especially want to get a copy of the pension application file. Since the widow's application was approved, it is obvious that some sort of proof of service was submitted. In those cases where the soldier has no service record, pension boards relied on affidavits from former officers and/or comrades of the soldier. Those affidavits should indicate when the soldier enlisted, how long he served, whether or not he was wounded, etc.
