Shortly after the Confederates launched the attack, Hardee apparently divided his corp into 2 temporary divisions. Hindman was given his own and Wood's brigade to command. It was most likely at this point, Shaver moved into brigade command. It must have been very early on because Col. Patterson of the 8th stated General Hindman ordered 8th to relieve the Mississippians on the skirmish line before the brigade had yet reached the main Union line. Hindman was not disabled until about 11:30 that morning.
