An excellent analysis of the McClernand-Grant power struggle is laid out in Steven E. Woodworth's book, "Nothing but Victory, The Army of the Tennessee." In fact this is one of the best CW books I've read in quite a while, but then again just about everything Woodworth writes is excellent.
