Too often these dates slip past us, but when we can I think it is good to pause for a few minutes to reflect on the sacrifices of our ancestors. Between 1861 and 1865, men died across the South (and in a few parts of the North) in battles large and small. We often remember the larger events, but the small ones sometimes have a way of fading from our memories.
The fight at Massard Prairie took place shortly after sunrise on July 27, 1864. A Confederate victory, the battle resulted in the deaths of 12 Confederate and 13 Union soldiers. Another 35 men were wounded. At least one civilian was also killed.
A portion of the battlefield has been preserved and is now maintained as the Massard Prairie Battlefield Park. There is a monument, commemorative flag staff and a short walking trail. If you would like to visit the park, it is located near the intersection of Morgan and Red Pine (off Geren Road) in the southeast quadrant of Fort Smith.
Best,
Dale
