I don't know exactly when the two 32 pd rifle guns were recovered from the river, but I believe that it was during the dregging operations in the 1950. That is why I know that Roane was not successful in recovering those guns. Those guns came from Fort Randolph on the Mississippi River north of Memphis. The CSS Ponchartarin picked up those guns as extra guns as that fort was being evacuated and abandoned in May 1862. The Ponchrtrain reportedly was so overloaded with those extra guns and all the ammunition for them that they could carry that her rear deck was almost awash.
Those guns were off loaded at Little Rock then shipped by train to Deval's Bluff with the other guns from the Ponchartrain, then those two by steamboat down the White River to St. Charles.
After Gen. Curtis abandoned his efforts in Northeastern Arkansas and moved his army to Helena, due to the failure of the Union navy to supply him by way of the White River, two of the Ponchartrains 9" SB guns and a 7" gun (the Lady Baxter) were moved to a new Fort at Arkansas Post called Hindman. At the same time a second heavy battery was being built again at St. Charles which mounted two 8" SB Columbiads.
