The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Arkansas 8th Cal, McRay's Regt Van Buren Count

Hello. While I cannot tell you about your person, I can tell you that you need to get a book
called Rebel's Hell on an interlibrary loan from almost any local library here in Arkansas.
The author of Rebel's Hell got all her information from the National Archives meaning it came
from the records the Union Army kept.
The book was written by a lady from Hazen, Arkansas at the time back in the mid-90's.
The author has moved on to Texas since then and as far as I know, the book is out of print.
Someone else may be able to tell you the author's name.
My ancestor Lt. Fielding Price of the 1st Arkansas Cav. also died in the Yankee Prison
of smallpox on Feb. 1.1865.
I know that most of the CSA people who died at the prison were first buried at Mt. Holly, but
after the war, all of those graves were moved to another site in Little Rock. It is believed that my ancestor
is one of those CSA unknowns just outside of the National Cemetery. That could have been
the fate of yours also if he died in that prison.
I also know that by using that book, I learned where my ancestor was picked up and who was
with him. It took me several days of using it to learn what I interested in, but I did it.
It took me over 25 years to learn what I did by bits and pieces of information.
Nowadays it can be done much easier because of boards like this.
Good luck in your search.
Linda
