My great-great-grandfather Alva Pitman was an original member of the 26th who was captured at Longview, taken to Rock Island, and ultimately joined the 3rd U. S. Volunteers. I have ordered a copy of Dee Brown's book, "The Galvanized Yankees," but I would like to know if there is any way to ascertain which company Alva was in. By the way, I had a number of ancestors in the 26th.
