No, there was no direct connection between the prewar State militia, and volunteer regiments of the Provisional Army of the Confederate States. The State law governing the militia forbade its employment in anything other than the defense of the State, under the overall command of the Governor. Volunteer regiments were organized for the defense of the country (the Confederate States), under the overall command of the President. Militia companies and volunteer companies naturally had many of the same men, because both were organized in specific geographic areas, and the similarity of their rosters have lead many to jump to the conclusion that the militia "transitioned" to Confederate service. It's understandable, but erroneous.
