I agree with you 100%. I am of the opinion that Dobbins changed perhaps
even his own identity. The man had lived through a war that cost him dearly,
and then his wife could no longer deal with him or his lifestyle, and
probably even deserting him in Brazil to return to the U. S.
It was very much a mid-life crises.
As far as the report that he was waiting bar, a lot of those folks who
told such tales were not trustworthy in my opinion.
The little church lady was probably the most honest report given
on the man saying he became a Catholic, learned the language,
and went in to another part of Brazil. Now that report was based on
fact that was taken from official records.
For all we know, Dobbins left a whole houseful of little descendants.
He could have even left ten sons and three daughters
for all we know. I personally hope his life ended on a happy note.
If we are going to tell a tall tale, might as well make it a good one.
