Randall Osborne sent me an email saying he'd seen Grier's doctoral thesis on "Confederate Emigration to Brazil" and it quotes a South Carolinian who says he saw Dobbins in Rio in 1874 running a hotel. Evidently, there's more on Dobbins in the records of the US Consulate in Belem.
