I had thought of that scenerio also. I just didn't post it.

If he was wounded in the hip he had to be recovering somewhere either in a private home or hospital. I like you had though that the absences of any mention of him being in a hospital in the federal records may have indicated a private home. And in either case he had been left behind by the survivors of the regiment.
