Hugh, I have run across a couple of such trials by military courts. One in particular that I recall was the trial of Capt. Jeremiah Earnest. He commanded a "local defense company" in Montgomery County, Arkansas. He was found guilty of the murder of Unionist civilians, and was executed by hanging on March 18, 1864, at Little Rock.
