Brigidier John Sappington Marmaduke was considered one of the finest cavalry officers serving in most of the major operations of the Trans-Mississippi District of Arkansas. [Edwin C. Bearss, "John Sappington Marmaduke," in Confederate General, 4:154--57]

There are numerous references to him in "I Acted from Principle, The Civil War Diaries of Dr. William M. McPheeters, Confederate Surgeon in the Trans-Mississippi," who was offered the office of Chief Surgeon of Marmaduke's Division of Cavalry which he turned down, December 21, 1863. Included are the Battles of Pilot Knob, Reed's Bridge, and Poison Spring.
