Doyle,

Well I just always have wondered why it never came to be and that he was soon commanding some size cavalry unit. I mean, I know he resigned in July of 1862 as part of the move to allow officers to resign to return west of the river to command those troops. Its just confusing what actually happened. I guess its much like today, when an officer feels the situation is not looking too good, they jockey for a better deal from superiors they are friendly with. No doubt, if it looked like most men were going to be sick etc and not able to join, he may very well have said, "thanks, but no thanks. I'll wait for something else."
