John B. Hale enlisted in Co. E, 31st Arkansas Infantry, at Dover, Arkansas, on February 1, 1862. He was listed as absent sick in hospital at Memphis, Tennessee, on the muster roll for October 31, 1862. He was dropped from the rolls on June 30, 1863, with the remarks, "supposed to be dead." Presumably, he died in the hospital at Memphis, and, if so, was most likely interred in Elmwood Cemetery.

The company descriptive roll described him at enlistment as a farmer, age 48, born in Tennessee, dark eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, height 5'8". He was a resident of Pope County, Arkansas.
