Following from EDITED memoir (NOT verbatim!) of Capt. Phares W. Shearer, 3rd Battalion (aka 33rd & 45th Regiment) Miss. Infantry, Col. Aaron B. Hardcastle, commanding:

"In November 1862 we then were designated as the 45th Mississippi and so continued to the end of the war. We were organized into a brigade (prior to the Battle of Murfreesboro) composed of the 32nd and 45th Mississippi, 16th, 33rd and 45th Alabama regiments — the “3rd Confederate Battalion of Irish” under Major John F. Cameron of Memphis, Tennessee..."

OVERVIEW of 3RD CONFEDERATE INFANTRY BATTALION-REGIMENT from "3RD CONFEDERATE INFANTRY REGIMENT," http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/3rdinf_regt.html:

3RD CONFEDERATE INFANTRY REGIMENT was one of those that were raised directly into the Confederate Army. The records of those units were never in the hands of the states. The 3rd Regiment, Confederate Infantry was organized in Jan 1862 by redesignating the 18th (Marmaduke's) AR Inf (formerly the 1st Battalion AR Inf). The regiment contained eight AR companies and two MS companies. It fought at Shiloh, Farmington, and Perryville, then was assigned to (S.A.M.) Wood's (Nov-Dec 1862), L.E. Polk's, Govan's Brigade(s), Army of Tennessee. It was united with the 5th (Confederate) regiment from Feb 1863 until Apr 1864. The unit fought in most of the battles from Murfreesboro to Atlanta and ended the war in North Carolina. They had 5 killed, 27 wounded and 37 missing at Murfreesboro. The 3rd/5th sustained many casualties at Chickamauga and had a total of 338 men and 232 arms in Dec 1863. In Jul 1864 the 3rd had only 62 men present for duty and only a few surrendered on 26 Apr 1865. Its field officers were Col John S. Marmaduke, LTC John F. Cameron, LTC J.C. Cole, LTC James B. Johnson, and LTC Henry V. Keep. It was consolidated about the 9th of Apr 1865 with the 1st, 2d, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 13th, 15th, 19th and 24th Inf Regiments to form the 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment (Consolidated) which was subsequently surrendered and paroled at Greensboro, NC in Apr 1865. The men of Company I were transferred to Co A 23 Apr 1862.

EDITED BIO. of Capt. > Maj. > Lt. Col. JOHN F. I would appreciate additional information and sources regarding the above referenced Lt. Col. John F. Cameron of Memphis, TN and additional history of the 3rd Confederate Infantry Regiment, aka “3rd Confederate Battalion of Irish,” especially during the latter part of 1862 to early 1863.

Thanks.
