Re: 20th Arkansas men buried there as well

Bryan-Thanx for your reply. After I posted I started digging through my papers and you did post a casualty list of men in the Corinth battle for the 20th Arkansas by company that you had posted on this site on July 4 2004. The Cozzens book on Corinth is excellent and my only (personal-4 ancestors served in co. C of the 20th) is he states that:"...the soldiers of the Twentieth Arkansas fled without firing a shot." We know from Gen. Cabell's report (again posted by you on the same date as above) that that simply was not the case. Cabell reports that the 20th was heavily engaged with a part ot the regiment going over the works at Corinth. The report of the 20th fleeing the battlefield is based, only on Union reports-Chap.21 footnote 8. There got that off my chest. I also found further information on my ancestor. His service record states only that he was killed at Corinth, but a archive report from the Arkansas History Commission lists a surgeons report that he actually died of his wounds near Holly Springs on Oct. 15. The surgeon was Sidney A. Simmons (enl. Mar. 1 1862-disch. on Aug. 2, 1862.) The report taken from Dr. Simmons personal papers, I suppose, unpublished, but may yeild interesting reading.

A spot check of the regiment shows hospitals scattered accross Miss., Jackson,LaGrange,Okolona,Holly Springs and Tupelo and it would be interesting to know were those men who died in hospital were buried. To the best of my knowledge my ancesters body did not return to Arkansas and I would be interested to know were the men who died at Holly Springs were buried.

Tnanx again for all you do in the effort to document the service of Arkansas Confederates.
