Re: Ark 4th infantry and Mt Vernon, Mo

Lee, those were not Missourians. Mount Vernon is where the regiment was originally mustered into service, having traveled there from southwest Arkansas, so the original members of the regiment are recorded as having "enlisted" (actually, mustered into service) at Camp Etter, Mount Vernon, Missouri, August 17, 1861; even though they had actually joined their companies back in Arkansas in May and June, 1861. You can find similar situations in the records of other regiments, e.g., Co. H, 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles, was organized in Hempstead County, Arkansas, but "enlisted" (were mustered into service) at Camp Crane Creek, Missouri, on August 4, 1861 -- but nairy a Missourian in the bunch.
