The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Arkansans in Daniel’s TX Bttry

This board is indeed a godsend.

I should reemphasize that the "huge influx" of men you asked about -- the conscripts at Tulip -- were permanently transferred to Daniel's Battery, and were dropped from the rolls of the 26th Arkansas.

In addition, as George pointed out, there were a few temporary details made from the 26th Arkansas and other Arkansas regiments. In fact, just about all the artillery batteries in the Trans-Mississippi received temporary details from time to time. Some were for as little as a month, others for much longer periods. I don't know why the batteries needed these constant details, unless it had to do with specialized skills needed in the artillery. While I haven't made a study of it to determine if this relevant, I have noticed that many of the detailed men were artisans -- blacksmiths, wheelwrights, wagonmakers, mechanics, etc. But then, presumably many also were farmers. It would be interesting to research the reasons for this policy.
