What a coincidence....for several years I have been intrigued by the circumstances encountered by the men of the 15th N/W Ark. inf. after the surrender. Did they go straight home.... how did they get home... what problems did they have to overcome, etc. I have never been able to find any written material on this. I wrote Dr. Bill Shea and he recomended I contact Terrence J. Winschel, who is with the park at Vicksburg. In his reply Mr Winschel said, "Sadly the archival collection at Vicksburg has a paucity of material on Ark. units that participated in the Vicksburg campaign. This is especially true of the 15th Ark. the file on which unit contains one document, which makes no mention of the aftermath of the siege. It is important to note that most of the soldiers from Ark. would not have been able to go home following the siege as much of their home state was under Federal control and the men would not have been permitted to go through the lines. Rather the majority of soldiers from Ark. would spend the aftermath of siege aat the parole camps located at Demololis,AL. and at Enterprise. Miss.

Bryan... how long would the aftermath have been, and do you have any info on those two camps he mentions?
