Those are some excellent responses. Another interesting question is, what would that $11 buy? As the effects of the U.S. naval blockade kicked in, the shortages of food and goods that accompanied the destruction of factories and farms, and good old-fashioned war profiteering, retail prices rose astronomically. On those rare occasions when Confederate soldiers were actually paid, their $11 didn't go vary far. Those boys were definitely not in it for the money.
