Steve -

I may be about to tell you some things you already know -- that's not to doubt that YOU know them. It is to guide you through some conclusions of mine.

Not sure about a contemporaneous map / 1860s, but here's a rough idea that might be helpful. Union Gen'l Edwin Steele used Camden Trail during retreat from Camden toward Batle of Jenkins Ferry. Records indicate they traveled Camden to Sandy Springs (now Leola) to Jenkins Ferry and on to Little Rock. reference: http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/1117/jenkins.html

Given those points, the modern approximation of the Camden Trail would follow AR-79 to Eagle Mills; AR-9 via Holly Springs an Princeton to Tulip; County Roads to Leola; roughly along railroad tracks to intersect with AR229 to Poyen; AR270/270B via Malvern; AR171 to Jenkins Ferry State Park.

From Jenkins Ferry, it gets complicated -- no modern roads along the route, so you have to backtrack to I-30 at about Maslvern into Little Rock.

Given terrain in the area, odds are that Jenkins Ferry was probably much closer to the vicinity of Lonsdale, AR, than it is to the current State Park location -- meaning the old Camden Trail probably cut an easy diagonal Lonsdale / Nance to the vicinity of Benton on I-30

Approximate map at

There are some other obvious divergences from the modern map given terrain of the area, but that's a very quick thumbnail of what a modern veriosn of the route probably looks like.

Hope this helps.
