Every two months a Confederate unit would stand muster with the dispositions of each soldier recorded on a roll. A soldier might be listed as present, absent without leave, in hospital, on furlough, detached, sick or so on. Some years after the war, at the request of the former Confederate states, these rolls were gone through and individual records compiled for the soldiers. Known as the Compiled Confederate Service Records. they are organized by state and unit and microfilm copies are available for viewing at the Arkansas Historical Commission.
