Uniform

I have uncovered a wartime photograph of private John Calvin Newton, Company A, 26th Arkansas Infantry. He was wearing what appears to be a uniform, but it is unlike any uniform I’ve come across. It is definitely not a Little Rock frock coat. It has a “lay down” collar and a double row of brass buttons down the front. Unfortunately, the photo is only from mid-chest up and a bit faint. Does this type of uniform sound familiar to anyone? This might be the only source as to the type of uniform worn by the 26th.

John C. Newton received serious wounds during the Battle of Jenkins’ Ferry, and his wife made an arduous trip from then Drew County (now Lincoln) by wagon to get him. Unfortunately, he died from those wounds on 31 MAY 1864. His grave is in the Newton Chapel Cemetery, Lincoln County.

I appreciate any input about the uniform.
