I am a grandaughter of Dr. John W. S. Leslie, Marshall, AR. He was a major in the Civil War. He was not a deserter. The term used in his service record was "disenfranchised" which meant that a soldier was granted a short leave to go home to take care of urgent business then he returned. My grandmother received a pension until her death which would not have been possible if he was a deserter, nor would he have been elected as a state representative.. His father was a major in the war.
