yup, I double-checked last night in Mike Banasik's book and found the quote/reference from Palmer.

Maybe someday I will be able to absolutely confirm that ggg-uncle Payne Byrd (see http://11arkansas.com/yank/robert_byrd.htm ) was in the charge depicted by Andy Thomas - canister and shell amidst burning haystacks - YOW!!!!!

I got a big kick out of Bill Shea's quip re Lincoln and Jim Lane (won't ruin it for those who haven't read the book yet)....
