Larry, just a guess, but he may have served in Maj. Thompson J. Bird's 1st Battalion Trans-Mississippi Cavalry. Bird's Battalion was formed late in the war with companies from Louisiana and Arkansas. It was referred to variously as Bird's Louisiana Battalion, Bird's Arkansas Battalion, and Bird's Louisiana and Arkansas Battalion. There were quite a few Arkansas pension applications citing service in this battalion -- all from southern Arkansas.
