Jonathan Hartman 1841-1888 served on both sides?

I have been tracking the story of a possible relative named Jonathan or Johnathan Hartman. He was born 1841 in DeKalb Co, AL. He is the son of Jesse Hartman and Lucinda Franklin of TN. He is first found in 1850 living with his widowed mother and siblings. The next record I find of him is in April to June 1862 when he is a member of Co D, 14 Powers Arkansas Infantry Confederate. There is a remark on the record files at footnote.com that he was left west of the Miss River and dropped from the rolls June 6 1862. Next record shows he mustered in Jun 13, 1862 in Co F, 27 Arkansas Infantry Confederate. That same record shows that he joined and enrolled in July 7, 1861 at Yellville, Ark for one year. He had horses worth $170. It was remarked of his prior service in Co D of the 14th Reg Ark Vol and that he was dismounted July 29, 1862. He went in as a private and last notation was private. Now things get interesting. He enlisted in Co M, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry Union on Jan 28, 1864 in Little Rock, AR. The entire 3rd was mustered out of service May 22, 1865 because of special instructions based upon a petition that the officers who enlisted the men represented their term of service as one year and that term had expired, although the enlisted forms clearly stated three(I have his military service records for the 3rd). Then in July 1867 he enlisted again in the US Army in Little Rock, giving his occupation as farmer. The records at ancestry.com show he served until Jul 12, 1870 in 28th Infantry Co G and 19th Infantry Co G and was discharged at Baton Rouge. In Sept 1870 he reenlists in the US Army for three years (could be five, hard to read) and his occupation is listed as soldier. It looks like he was in the 6th Infantry Co G (the record is hard to read even enlarged to maximum). Remark: DESERTED MARCH 25, 1871. THe next piece of information I found is that someone filed for a pension for minor children 24 Sep 1888 in Arkansas for Samuel E Hartman et al minors, he is listed as DEAD, and the pension application number is 380918. There are two different index cards for his pension. One with the label DEAD and one with the name of Samuel E Hartman. There was a private act of Congress in 1870 that the men serving in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry could apply for a pension the same as men who served for three years. Does anyone know anything else about this man? I cannot locate any census records for him between 1860 and 1888. No marriage records. Has anyone seen a Civil War military record like this? Would his later desertion affect his pension? Trying to find a descendant to put in contact with a living descendant of one of Jonathan's siblings. Place of birth, age, physical description all seem to fit just one man with this name. Any additional information welcome.
