Re: James S. Jackson, b. 1839, Tn., please help

Linda,

I believe James S. Jackson was James Scott Jackson.

He married at least twice.

There’s a marriage recorded in Independence County, Arkansas, between James Scott Jackson, aged 20, and Elenor Elizabeth Vincel, aged 17, on 26 March 1861.

An Elneor E. Vincil, aged 15 and born in Kentucky, appears on the 1860 census in Barren Township, Independence County, Arkansas.

There’s a marriage recorded in Independence County, Arkansas, between James S. Jackson and Louisa A. Henderson, both “of marriageable age,” on 6 October 1868.

I believe Louisa Henderson was the widow of Pleasant B. Henderson. There’s a marriage recorded in Independence County, Arkansas, between Pleasant B. Henderson, aged 20, and Angeline McClelland, aged 17, on 22 August 1861.

A Louisa E. Mcclelan, aged 5, born in North Carolina, appears on the 1850 census in White River Township, Independence County, Arkansas.

This was James Scott Jackson’s household in Barren Township, Independence County, Arkansas, in 1880:

James S. JACKSON Head Married Male White 39 TN TN NC Farmer
Louisa A. JACKSON Wife Married Female White 35 NC NC NC Keeping House
Pleasant Henderson JACKSON SSon Single Male White 17 AR AR NC
William P. JACKSON Son Single Male White 18 AR TN KY
Laura E. JACKSON Daughter Single Female White 11 AR TN NC
Dora A. JACKSON Daughter Single Female White 10 AR TN NC
John W. JACKSON Son Single Male White 9 AR TN NC
Sarah A. JACKSON Daughter Single Female White 7 AR TN NC
Harriet R. JACKSON Daughter Single Female White 5 AR TN NC
Louisa E. JACKSON Daughter Single Female White 4 AR TN NC
Franklin T. JACKSON Son Single Male White 1 AR TN NC

Both James (59; b. November 1840, TN) and Angeline (55; b. October1844, NC) Jackson were alive as late as June 1900, when they were counted in the census in Dwelling 110, Barren Township, Independence. James' 80-year-old mother, “Marthena,” was living with them. I believe her name was actually Parthena. The 1900 census shows James and Angeline having been married for 30 years, and that 11 of the 12 children born to Angeline were still living.

I know a little about James and Angeline Jackson’s daughter (aged 5 in 1880), Harriet R. Jackson.

There’s a Texas Certificate of Death on file for Hattie Lewallen, who died on 25 May 1948 in Edinburg Hospital, Edinburg, Hildalgo County, Texas. She died from cholangitis [an inflammation of the bile duct], with hypertension a contributory cause. She had been hospitalized four days. Her usual residence was in Donna, Hidalgo County. She was born on 21 July 1875 in Arkansas. Her age at death was 72 years, 10 months, and 4 days. Her Personal Particulars were Female, White, and Married. Her father was named as J.S. Jackson, born in Tennessee. Her mother was listed as Angeline McClellan, born not in North Carolina, but in North Dakota. Her body was removed from Edinburg to Donna on 27 May 1948, by the Stotler Mortuary of Donna. The Informant on the death certificate was Miss Estella Lewallen of Donna, Texas.

Harriet “Hattie” (Jackson) Lewallen's husband was John Washington Lewallen. There’s also a Texas Certificate of Death for him. He died on 17 April 1954 in Donna, Hidalgo County, Texas, where he had lived for 10 years. The cause of death was carcinomatosis, cancer of colon, with senility another significant condition. His personal particulars were Male, White, and Widowed. His Usual Occupation was Farmer. The death certificate listed his date and place of birth as 25 January 1877 in Arkansas. He died at the age of 77 years, 2 months, and 22 days. His parents were listed as D.M. Lewallen and Evelyn Stevens, both born in Arkansas. He was buried at the Donna Cemetery on 19 April 1954. The funeral director was from the Stotler Mortuary. The Informant listed on the death certificate was Stella Lewallen.

D.M. Lewallen was Daniel Monroe Lewallen (b. April 1856, AR; d. August 1916), a son of Alabama-born Monroe Washington Lewallen and Mary Ann (Wann) Lewallen.

Daniel Monroe Lewallen was an older brother of my mother’s maternal grandmother, Mary Jane (Lewallen) Jackson (b. 1861, AR; d. 1954, KS)

My mother’s maternal grandfather and Mary Jane’s husband was William B.P. Jackson (b. 1857, TN; d. 1911, MO).

William and Mary Jane Jackson, along with the first of their 12 children, were living in Black River Township, Independence County, Arkansas, in 1880.

My question is: What kinship connection was there, if any, between my Tennessee-born William B.P. Jackson and Tennessee-born James Scott Jackson, both living in Independence County, Arkansas, in 1880?

Regards,

Clete
