It seems like Doyle or someone did some serious research on this awhile back.What a fascinating and perhaps overlooked subject.Armies would have marched and fought on the information that went thru those wires.And what material were those wires made of,how manufactered,where etc...

It would also be very interesting to see maps at various periods showing where the lines were located.Perhaps Confederate in red and the Federal lines in blue.Might shed some light on strategic operations.
