My ggg grandfather was Lt. Fielding Price of White County, Arkansas. He was captured in late Nov. of 1864 in eastern
Arkansas along with several others. He died on Feb. 1, 1865 in the Yankee Prison in Little Rock of smallpox.
Until I read the book Rebel's Hell that was about the prison, which was taken from records in the National Archives,
I never knew he was actually military.
That was where I learned that Fielding Price was a member of the 1st Arkansas Cav. Of the men who went to the prison
with him, one other died and the other three or four lived.
As far as keeping records, if there were no records to find, then no one could have been proven to be part of the 1st
so I think that was the idea. You need to remember these people were considered rebels and guerrillas so the Union Army
had no use for them.
I do know that around about 1920, a Moye died out of White County. His obit made the front page of the Arkansas Gazette
at that time and the obit stated that he was a CSA veteran having served with the 1st Arkansas Cav, under Dobbins.
So opinions had changed.
My advice is to keep looking, the information is there, but you may have to dig it up one piece at a time, just like I did.
