W. P. Withers, Private, Company K, 1st Missouri Cavalry*, enlisted August 20, 186_ in Henry County, Missouri by Captain Bronaugh for 3 years or duration the war, appointed 2nd Sergeant September, 1862 and acted as such until October 21, when he was detailed as Nurse, appointed 2nd Sergeant again February 1st, 1863, last recorded present the end of February, 1863**, no further records

* This regiment appears to have been variously known on the field as 1st Regiment Missouri Cavalry, Gordon's Regiment Missouri Cavalry, and Shelby's Regiment Missouri Cavalry; but it was designated by the Confederate War Department as the 5th Regiment Missouri Cavalry.

** The Record of Events for this Jan & Feb, 1863 muster roll, the last on record, states:

"Since the 1st of January this Company has been engaged in the battle of Springfield, Mo. in which it has 1 Lieut. and 5 Privates wounded and also in the battle of Harsville in which Capt. L.J. Crocker was wounded."

Withers, Private, Company K, 1st Regiment Missouri Cavalry, enlisted August 20, 186_ by Captain Bronaugh for 3 years or the war, transferred to Captain Garrett's Company as Company Blacksmith Sept. 1st, retransferred December 1st, captured in Izzard County, Arkansas, April 1, 1864, sent from Batesville, Arkansas to Little Rock, by "Celeste," April , 1864, sent to Rock Island, Illinois prison camp, transferred for exchange to Point Lookout, Maryland prison camp, February 15, 1865, admitted to General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia February 26, 1865, no further records
