In Response To: Tumlinson's Company ()

Tumlinson's company was transferred to Hawthorn's regiment as (new) Co. K on December 16, 1862, during the general reorganization of the army after the battle of Prairie Grove. Prior to that it was part of Maj. William Gipson's short-lived battalion of mounted rifles as Co. D. Someone may have better information than I about Gipson's battalion. The battalion may have been disbanded in September 1862. Two companies were assigned to Carroll's cavalry regiment, and the remainder were dismounted on or about September 16, 1862. I have seen a couple of references which indicate that Tumlinson's company was an unassigned independent company between September and December 1862. Capt. Wiley A. Tumlinson died in Franklin County, Arkansas, on December 8, 1862. He appears to have died of wounds sustained (possibly) in one of the skirmishes leading up the battle of Prairie Grove.
