Mark, I wasn't trying to be a smart-aleck or, worse, one of those insufferable boors who are poised to pounce on every little nuance. I was hoping to get some discussion going about Witt's regiment. It was unique among the Vicksburg-Port Hudson regiments in that it did not report to the exchange camp in Hempstead County, but instead returned to its home turf north of the Arkansas River, and operated as a semi-independent command for the rest of the war. Much of their time was spent in tit-for-tat guerrilla fighting with bands of jayhawkers posing as Unionist home guards. Witt's outfit could be the subject of a fascinating book.
