Union Prison in Arkansas

Hello. My long lost cousin who lives here in Arkansas is interested in the
Union Prison in Little Rock-the one I always refer to as the Yankee Prison.
When did it actually begin?
Was it when Little Rock was taken over by Union forces in late summer of 1863 and
had it previously been a Confederate one?
I know it ended in the spring of 1865, but was there an official closing time?
One of the men with Lt. Fielding Price who died of smallpox also died from
smallpox but around about May 8, 1865 or so. Those healthy enough to leave had
already taken the oath and left by the time the sick man died.
So did it have an official closing date?
Thanks.
Linda
