David McKenzie, enlisted as a Private in Company G, Newton's Regiment, [8th] Arkansas Cavalry*, June 12, 1863 in Fulton County, Arkansas by Capt. Bryans for 3 years, deserted August 4,1863, recorded present on the Jan & Feb, 1864 muster roll, captured at Pilot Knob, Missouri, September 27,1864, admitted to Post (Garrison,) and Prison Hospital at Alton, Illinois Military Prison November 16, 1864, died January 21, 1865 of smallpox

* This company was originally Company I, 4th Regiment (Burbridge's) Missouri Cavalry.

The regiment was designated at various times as Newton's Regiment Arkansas Cavalry, Morgan's Regiment Cavalry, and 2nd Regiment Arkansas Cavalry; and at the same time it was known as 5th Regiment Arkansas Cavalry and 8th Regiment Arkansas Cavalry.

2nd or Morgan's Arkansas Cavalry Rgt.

Cols. Robert C. Newton, Thomas J. Morgan, LtCols. John P. Bull,
John W. Coarser, Majs. John Smith, William N. Portis

The 5th Ark. Cavalry Rgt. was organized in the spring of 1863.
Attached to J. G. Walker's Division, it skirmished at Helena, Brownsville,
Bayou Fourche and Pine Bluff.

Later it was reorganized as Morgan's Arkansas Cavalry Rgt. in the
spring of 1864. It was assigned to Cabell's brigade and fought at
Poison Spring and Marks' Mills where it lost 18 percent of the 130
engaged. It took part in Price's 1864 Missouri expedition and disbanded
prior to the June 1865 surrender.
