I have a quick question regarding examining surgeons in general and this Dr specifically. Were examining surgeons always military, always civilian or a mix? This man was an examining surgeon, he was from Phillips County in 1860 and shows up in the Arkansas hospitals in northern Georgia. However, I find no enlistment info on him if he was military. I was just curious as to that status and wondered if he was just a civilian doctor who worked at the hospitals. I have found some reference to him regarding his contracting an eye disease while working in the hospitals. He is the G-G-Grandfather of my wife and his pistol and other medical articles are still within the family. Just curious about his exact position.
