This could be your man:

James J. Murphy**, Captain, Company B, Whitfield's Battalion*, enlisted October 19, 1861 at Waldron, Arkansas, absent on recruiting duty as recorded on the Jan. & Feb., 1862 muster roll, last recorded present on the Mar. & Apr., 1862 of Company B, Whitfield's Legion Texas Cavalry, no further records

* This company was formerly Captain Murphy's Company Arkansas Cavalry. It was assigned as Company B on organization of this battalion and was transferred about June 4, 1862 to the 1st Battalion Arkansas Cavalry, becoming Company H of that organization.

The 27th Regiment Texas Cavalry (also known as the 1st Texas Legion and as Whitfield's Legion Texas Cavalry) was first organized as the 4th Battalion Texas Cavalry November 18, 1861, with four companies A to D. It was increased to a regiment dof thirteen companies April 2, 1862, and re-organized May 8, 1862.sd

** Cards are filed with the 27th Texas Cavalry. The American CW Research Database carries him with Company B, 27th Texas Cavalry

.....

Company B 27th Texas Cavalry, formerly Co. B, 4th Batt'n, Texas Cavalry, orginally Capt. Murphy's Co. Ark. Cav., Sub. became Co. H, 1st Batt'n. Ark. Cav.

James J. Murphy, Capt. Co. B, 4th Tex. Cav. & Co. B, 27th Tex. Cav., dropped May 8, 1862

.....

Company Muster Roll for the period Mar. & Apr., 1862 shows station of company at Camp McIntosh, Ark, April 30, 1862

Record of Events

The reason this Muster Roll is not-signed by the Mustering and Inspecting Officer is that-on the 30 day of April 1862, the Co. was Commanded by Capt. J. J. Murphy and was in Whitfields, Texas Legion and that Capt. Murphy was not re-elected on the reorganization of the Co. May 8 1862 and that he failed to make out the rolls as required by law. Capt. Catterson was elected Captain on the reorganization but was unable to process the company papers from Capt. Murphy until the 4 of June the day the company was transferred from Whitfields Texas Legion to 1 Battalion of Texas Cavalry.

W. S. Catterson, Capt. Co. H.
