The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Mark Christ: Ark Sesqui CW books?

I am hoping to finish the editing over 100 letters of 4 brothers from Saline County, AR. They were prolific writers and their sister did an outstanding job of keeping them. Three fought for CS units from Oak Hills to Dug Gap and another fought for the Union. During the war the mother of the brothers died, the Union soldier's wife and all three Confederate brothers. I am working with a descendant who transcribed the letters as she got them from relatives and then she published her own books of the letters that cover from 1840-1940's or so. I am just including the ones covering their move to Saline Co from Tenn and up through the end of the war. The original books were random letters from different times and very little editing or explanations of what they were talking about are there. I am adding information on the events covered as well as footnoting the letters extensively. I hoped to have it done already but unfortunately work, family and Uncle Sam's military duty interupt it quite often. THey are very informative about a family truly torn apart but one that tried to stay in touch with each other. It will cover some of the following as well as other battles and events: Oak Hills, Island 10, Corinth, Port Hudson, Vicksburg Campaign, all of the Army of Tennessee battles from Kentucky through Dug Gap as well. The big thing will be finding someone who wants to publish the effort. Even without any effort of mine, the letters are a treasure trove when read!
