I just want to let you know that the numbers quoted from Fox are wrong. My own research has determined the following, taken from company and regimental records, hospital records, and first-person accounts
12 killed; 17 died of wounds of which 5 were accidental; 1 suicide; 4 drowned; 388 died of disease; 224 received disability discharges from disease or wounds; 125 deserted; and 10 were dishonorably discharged.
My history of the Fifth Illinois "The Prairie Boys go to War," is heading for the publishers in a month, and then has to go through the review process, etc. I expect publication sometime next year, hopefully. If you want to know more about the regiment, send me an email and I'll send whatever I have, including published articles. Hope this helps.
