It is interesting to note how many officers violated the basic command principles you spelled out, whether through ignorance, the desire to lead by example, or just being caught up in the moment -- Col. Manning (3rd Arkansas) at Gettysburg, Maj. Gen. Cleburne at Franklin, etc., etc. It would be interesting to try to figure out how many of those "impetuous" officers were volunteers with no previous military training, as opposed to those who were West Point trained, and whether that made any difference.
