Bridges Arkansas Cavalry Battalion

At the Vicksburg web site there is an Order of Battle. One of the units inside the salient was Stirman's Arkansas Sharpshooter Battalion. Outside with Whitfield's Cavalry Brigade under Jackson was Bridges' Arkansas Cavalry Battalion. If it existed it was made up of Company I, 6th Texas Cavalry Regiment and Company H, 9th Texas Cavalry Regiment.

These two companies were attached to Stirman's Battalion at Corinth and Hatchie Bridge to form Stirman's Sharpshooter Regiment in Phifer's Brigade. Cozzen's in his book on Corinth placed Stirman's Regiment on the left of Phifer's Brigade on line. As Stirman's Regiment was trained as skirmishers and sharpshooters, they would have normally been employed across Phifer's front. If placed as Infantry on Phifer's left, they would have overrun the one small battery to their front and taken Rosecran's headquarters. They would have also been backed by the regiment that did make it into the center of town. Some of the Texans were there, but I believe the Stirman Regiment was employed as skirmishers across the whole of Phifer's front. This employment strengthened the front, but lowered the chance of bagging Rosecran.

Lt Col Harry F. Bridges of Stirman's Regiment was the ex commander of Company I, 6th Texas Cavalry Regiment. After the break up of Stirman's Regiment after Hatchie Bridge, Bridges reverted to Major. The two companies of Texans were to go back to their units, but were often employed by Whitfield and later Ross as shock troops because of their training. Bridges died leading a Cavalry Charge, protecting Stephen D. Lee. His detachment was Lee's guard during February of 1863. Lee described Bridges courage in the Southern Historical Papers.

I would appreciate comment on this subject, Stirman's Regiment, Bridges and any related information. I have added a lot of information at my web site under Company I, 6th Texas Cavalry. Two of my kin rode with this unit
