I did not have a lot of info about Henry Utter during the war except that he mustered out a corporal; however, I do have postwar info. He received an invalid pension no. 465583 in April 1880, due to problems from his military service. Unfortunately, even with the regiment's hospital and company records, I do not have a diagnosis of the illnesses he suffered during the war. More than likely, he had malaria, dysentery, and/or typhoid, which leave the sufferer with long-term problems, including hepatitis, liver damage, and bowel problems. Utter died in E. St. Louis in 1917 after a long career as a dry goods clerk. His widow received a pension. no. 829155, in May 1917. He did attend the 1885 Fifth reunion (2nd) in Vandalia, and probably attended others, but only have info about the one.
