Numbering of Militia Regiments
In Response To: Re: For Damon ()

Thanks for the information! One of my issues with the Territorial period is the numbering system for the units. Governor George Izard printed a list of the Militia Officers, by regiment in 1825. In 1830, the Militia was reorganized into 2 Brigade and the Brigade Commanders were directed to renumber the brigades and report back on the new system. In 1836, the Militia was reorganzied into 6 Brigades and once again the commanders were to renumber the Regiments and report back. I have never found these numbering systems, and I have never seen a system that makes Washington County either the 1st or the 2nd Militia Regiment. I need to go back and do a thorough rewrite of the Wikipedia Article on the Arkansas Territorial Militia, but I am a little overwelmed with the Civil War period at present. Looking forward to a rainy weekend. Good excuse to spend a day parked behind a Microfilm reader at the Arkansas History Commission.
