Dedication of Confederate Memorial Cemetery

For any interested, in keeping with 150 Anniversary activities, the David Owen Dodd Camp 619 SCV of Benton Arkansas will dedicate the Confederate Memorial Section of the Glidewell-Leech Cemetery in Benton, Arkansas at 10:30 on Saturday June 25th. The cemetery is on Dogwood Dr which is just north of I 30 in a neighborhood behind the Home Depot in Benton. It is reached by taking AR Hwy 5 north towards Hot Springs and is only about 200 yds north of I-30. Dogwood goes off of HWY 5, towards the east. The purpose is to create and maintain a memorial cemetery for as many of the 248 Saline County men who died or were killed during the war. A few have markers where they died, or VA memorial markers obtained by descendants but over 90% of the men were never marked and many were in mass burials or hasty burials around hospitals etc and their remains were never recovered or identified. The first 8 VA memorial markers have been placed with others on order. The section will resemble a mini national cemetery when completed. It is hoped to eventually have markers for every soldier that died 1861-65.

Dedication will include info on each of the 8 men, and a brief dedication by Arkansas State REP Kim Hammer. We would be glad to have anyone present who desires.

This is the first of its kind, where memorial markers will be placed in one location to remember the soldiers who are in no or unknown burials from battlefields, to hospital cemeteries to POW camps from Arkansas ot Virginia. It is hoped other counties will attempt to do the same to remember their lost veterans of the war.
