In looking back at both of his posts, I find that either could be plausible. Without more concrete information for documentation, there are quite a few possibilities and what Doyle mentions, in my opinion, could have occurred. I have found men from Saline County that served and rec'd pensions but there is absolutely no CSR or documentation that they ever enlisted but other records show that the did. ALso, as Doyle said, just because the dead soldier was found with the musket is not 100% the man whose name was on it. Mounted INfantry units did indeed carry the long musket many times but no way of knowing for sure the exact unit.
