The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Bob, I've gotten myself bogged down in another regimental research project, so I just noticed your post about the discrepancy in enlistment dates for some members of Co. F, 26th Arkansas Infantry. I think I can shed some light on this subject.

Capt. George Douglass Alexander, "Tulip Rifles," Co. I, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, was severely wounded at Capon Bridge, Virginia, on January 4, 1862. He lost his left arm and was furloughed back to Dallas County, Arkansas. In April 1862 he was directed to enroll recruits for Company I. He recruited 41 men at various dates in May 1862, but before they could be sent to Virginia, they were detained by Maj. Gen. Thomas Carmichael Hindman for service in the Trans-Mississippi Department. Only a few of the recruits escaped Hindman's net and went on to Virginia. The majority of them formed the basis of Co. F, 26th Arkansas Infantry. Their date of enlistment was recorded as June 16, 1862 -- the date on which the company was mustered into service. A couple of months later (August 12, I believe) quite a few of the men were transferred to Capt. James Mickall Daniel's "Lamar Artillery" (9th Texas Field Battery). The transferees were carried on the rolls of Daniel's Texas Battery with enlistment dates that correspond to the dates in May 1862 when they were recruited by Captain Alexander for the 3rd Arkansas Infantry.

According to the muster rolls of Daniel's Texas Battery, the battery was stationed at Camp Little River, Arkansas, on April 30, 1862; DeValls Bluff on June 30, 1862; Little Rock on August 31, 1862; and Camp Nelson on October 31, 1862.

I hope this helps a little.
