Crawford brothers in the civil war

My friend Roger Letsom had two great-great uncles, Frederick Ross Crawford, and Francis Alexander Crawford. According to Roger's family story, the brothers were both Union(but he's not really sure of this) soldiers who were captured at Pea Ridge. They were chained, or tied together, and marched south. They escaped during the night, and swam the river, (don't know which one) still bound together, the family does not know any more than this. Does anyone have any information on these men?
